The objective of this programmatic South-South knowledge exchange, “Skilled Teachers, Skilled Nation”, was to support governments in Central Asia (CA) in improving the effectiveness of their investments in teachers. For the Government of Uzbekistan, the objective of this knowledge exchange was to increase capacity on how to successfully design, coordinate, implement, and monitor a growth-oriented poverty reduction strategy.

The Government of Uzbekistan wanted to improve e-services to its citizens, businesses, and government for greater efficiency, data availability, and transparency. However, the Government lacked the appropriate regulatory and policy framework. Malaysia, among the leading countries in the developing world to embark upon implementing e-government services, offered Uzbek officials an opportunity to discuss eGovernment practices with representatives from all levels of government.

Challenge

To provide access to more reliable, sustainable energy and power sources, representatives of five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) participated in an exchange with India. They learned about the pros and cons of new technologies in the transmission and distribution of power, and how such technologies might be practical in their respective contexts.

Challenge

To ensure its exports are competitive on international markets, the Government of Uzbekistan sought to upgrade its national quality infrastructure (NQI), supporting standardization, accreditation, certification, and metrology (measurement). Through an exchange with Croatia, Uzbekistani officials increased their awareness of policy options and clarified next steps for modernizing the country’s NQI in line with EU and international requirements.
